One thing that is keeping the Houston homes market strong is the availability of jobs. Even though the overall economy has been doing poorly throughout the country; Houston has kept a strong and stable job market. If you just graduated college or you just simply want a change from the area you have been living in because of the economic down turn, Houston, Texas is the place you should think of first.  If you are already living in Houston area, you should be happy to know that you’re better off than most places in the country. While there is still area for improvement within the Houston job market, it is doing well compared to the national job market, which declined by 0.1 percent.  The Texas Workforce Commission reported on August 15, 2008 that during the month of July, Houston employers were able to create 57,100 jobs for an over the year growth rate of 2.2 percent.

The job growth in Houston market this year is on track to create close to 100,000 jobs, similar to 2007 numbers that show Houston employers created 112,100 jobs in the Houston market.  After only seven months into this year, the Houston jobs market has already created 57,100 jobs.  This indicates that we have the potential to reach the magic number of 100,000 jobs created.  For the past three month, two areas in Houston have been leading contributors to the Huston job market.  These are the Sugar Land and the Baytown areas. Both of these two areas contributed up to 56,600 jobs on a year over year basis, according to the Houston chronicles news report.  Other areas accounted for the rest of the jobs that were created, and hence, indicating diversity in areas that created jobs in Houston.

The leading job contributors in Houston market are education and the health sector and the oil and gas industry. The education and the health sector created 10,200 jobs in the Houston job market; this was a 3.6 percent increase from 2007. The oil and gas industry created 5,500 jobs over the year for a 6.7 percent increase, according to the Texas Workforce Commission data. Together, these industries account for 27 percent of the total jobs that were created in Houston market. The other jobs were created in other industries which is an indication of the diversity and strength of the Houston job market.

Overall, one would say Houston is a stable place that has been able to battle the economic down turn which befall most parts of the country.
