I think that Ike will kill home sales for the next couple of months but that inventory might go down because of a number of people taking their homes off the market. I believe the 50,000 housing units the metro area has lost will continue the strength that the rental market has seen and a strong rental market tends to shore up the resale market a great deal. I think the South East side of Houston may take a hit on appreciation as people will be rightfully nervous about the large amount of flooding that part of town saw. That is my take anyways we will have to wait and see how things play out.

As a native Houstonian, this was quite an interesting read. It's disappointing to hear that home sales are drastically down, but it's definitely good that home prices rose. I do wonder, however, how Ike will affect everything. I know many people whose homes experienced major damage, and people who learned that their neighborhoods do not perform well (in terms of storm drains, power lines, etc) in major storms.
